Bulgarian Energy Holding, Greece’s DEPA and Italy’s Edison International Holding have reached a development agreement regarding the construction of the Interconnection Pipeline Greece – Bulgaria (IGB).
The pipeline will provide gas supply from the Interconnection Pipeline Turkey – Greece – Italy, which imports gas from the Caspian region and the Middle East to Bulgaria and the Balkan countries. The IGB will be 160 km in length, connecting Komotini, Greece, to Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, and will have a transport capacity of 3–5 Bcm/a.
Bulgarian Energy Holding Executive Director Galina Tosheva said that the project "is a real step towards diversification of supply and strengthening the energy security of the country and the region in the medium term”.
Forecasted investments for the project are €150 million ($US204.3 million), with €45 million ($US61.2 million) worth of co-financing from the European Union’s European Economic Recovery Plan.
The pipeline is due to come into operation in 2013.
