Spanish renewable energy company Acciona wins €450m Mexico wind park deal

Spanish renewable energy company Acciona Energy has won a €450m contract to construct and operate three wind parks in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, beating rivals Iberdrola Renovables and Elecnor.

Construction will begin in the second half of the year, with the plants expected to come into operation in 2011, and capacity will total 306MW.
The deal accounts for 12.7 per cent of the wind power implementation objective to 2013 stated in Acciona’s recently-announced strategic plan, it said.

The company already has one wind park in operation in Mexico that it said has good wind potential and will ensure a profitable return on investment.

The nearby 250.5MW Eurus facility, the largest wind power installation in Latin America in terms of installed capacity, delivers electricity to Cemex cement production plants across Mexico.

Acciona’s strategic plan sets out the construction of 2,400MW of wind power over between 2010 and 2013.

The wind parks awarded through the government’s call for tender are Oaxaca II, Oaxaca III and Oaxaca IV, which each have a capacity of 102MW and are located in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region.

The deal involves orders for 204 of its AW 70/1500 wind turbines, which will be manufactured in the second half of this year, in an expansion of its production capacity. The wind parks will also be able to obtain and sell emission reduction certificates, as Mexico is eligible for the Kyoto Protocol’s clean development mechanisms.

Earlier this month Acciona announced plans to invest about €3.8bn in energy, waste management, R&D and infrastructure before 2013. The company ended fiscal year 2009 with a net profit of €1.26bn, consolidated revenue of €6.51bn and EBITDA at €1,04bn.

In 2009, the main contributor to the group’s EBITDA was Acciona Energy at 59.4 per cent, followed by Acciona Infrastructure with 19.7 per cent, then Acciona Real Estate at 4.1 per cent and other business divisions accounting for 16.8 per cent.
