Which topics are addressed during this course?
The Natural Gas Strategy Course (NGSC) is split into two sessions of one week. The NGSC is designed to give you insight into the processes and dynamics of the gas industry. The NGSC’s main programme is divided into two modules:
Module 1: The context of the international gas business
The first module focuses on the position that gas has achieved in the global energy environment, the fundamental characteristics of the gas industry and the role of technology within gas markets. You will investigate the processes of developing commercial outlets for gas finds and the economic considerations behind the growth of the business. You will also explore such matters as the long-term energy outlook, the inf luence of environmental policies and the resulting prospects for gas, as well as the influence of geopolitics on energy supply and the industry’s response in terms of strategies and developments.
Module 2: Business development
The contextual trends and developments that were presented and discussed in module 1 are now directed to their effects on the gas business chain, especially in terms of opportunities and threats to either create or diminish business value. The participants will work with strategic business development concepts to develop new business in the world of natural gas. The gas value chain will be analyzed and participants will discuss the particular contextual influences on the chain. Financial issues will also be considered as well as the risks of the new business. The different customer types and their specific requirements will be analyzed. What is the best possible way to develop gas markets? Attention will also be paid to the inf luence that regulatory forces and competitive forces have on the business.

How did others evaluate the course?
“I registered for this course because I wanted to have a more comprehensive view of the context of the industry I am working in, and a better insight in its dynamics. I certainly got that. The course is very concentrated. It has to be, because a relative large number of topics and angles need to be discussed within a relatively short period of time. The quality of the teaching staff ensured that the course succeeded in doing this, even to industry insiders. Many of them are prominent experts from the industry, politics and science. They bring a lot of experience to the table. They know and understand the essentials. This helps them to recognize and concentrate on core issues in the course too. And... we found them to be highly inspiring. I also enjoyed working on the case study. To me it was a valuable practical exercise. Did the course help me in my current job? Oh, absolutely. I am currently working with a customer on an underground gas storage project. The course expanded my overall scope and that is a big help right now.”
