EDI was set up as a joint foundation of N.V. Nederlandse Gasunie, GasTerra B.V., PJSC Gazprom and the University of Groningen with Shell joining in 2006.
In 2002 the Russian and Dutch governments discussed the foundation of a platform for the exchange of knowledge in the energy sector. N.V. Nederlandse Gasunie decided to take the lead in this initiative and approached the University of Groningen due to its extensive knowledge of educational programmes. Gazprom's role was defined in a memorandum of understanding which outlines Gazprom's commitment to the Energy Delta Institute initiative.
Partners involved in EDI include Founding partners, Associated partners, Business partners and Knowledge partners.
