As we embrace a zero-emission energy system, there is now a growing consensus that hydrogen will play a critical role in the race to decarbonisation. Hydrogen can be used to store and transport (renewable) energy efficiently. It is poised to meet a vast range of energy needs and accelerate efforts to achieve a climate-neutral economy by 2050.
As momentum gathers, demand for skills and expertise in the Hydrogen industry is set to grow exponentially. Hydrogen’s Role in the Energy Transition is an online introductory course for forward-thinking professionals looking to leverage the innovation wave. Delivered by Energy Delta Institute and EIT InnoEnergy, this course discusses the role of Hydrogen in achieving a carbon-neutral economy by 2050. The online, self-paced learning course includes two interactive, virtual sessions and gives you a rock-solid understanding of all the dynamics at play: from the role of Hydrogen in the energy value chain, the actors in the context of Hydrogen production, transport, storage and end-use applications to economic, institutional, policy and regulation, safety and societal dimensions.
Hydrogen’s Role in the Energy Transition will empower you to:

Hydrogen’s Role in the Energy Transition delivers a multi-perspective understanding of the way in which Hydrogen will drive a carbon-neutral society by 2050.
You will explore the characteristics of hydrogen as a leading carbon-free candidate, together with the main actors in Hydrogen production, transport and storage and end-use application. You will also discover the technological, economic, regulatory and safety context as we look towards the future implementation of Hydrogen as a critical player in the global energy transition. Finally, you will go through two real-world cases from the hydrogen sector. In the first case, Home Power Solutions (HPS) – Picea, you will reflect and discuss about the drivers and barriers behind the use of hydrogen for residential heat, understand the technical aspects of HPS’s innovation, and apply aspects of hydrogen safety, regulation and policy incentives. In the second case, conducted with Waterstofnet and Colruyt Group, you will be asked to compare a hydrogen car and an EV from a financial, sustainability and user acceptance/ease of use point of view.
Hydrogen’s Role in the Energy Transition integrates the benefits of online, self-paced learning and interaction with faculty through virtual sessions.
The blended programme consists of a Small Private Online Course and two intensive three-hour virtual sessions, which can be taken from the participants’ usual study location. Specifically, the online course consists of two online learning modules of five lessons each, which participants can follow at their own pace. Each lesson includes relevant reading materials. Some practice exercises are added and there will be online assessments to test your learning. In addition, the course includes case work on hydrogen applications and innovations. This is followed by the two virtual sessions with energy experts and our academic expert, Theo Fens. During these sessions, you will be able to network with other experts and participants.
The small private online course consist of the following lessons*:
*Recommended pace of learning: 4 weeks, 2.5 hours per week (10 learning hours).
